Sexual Purity: Where’s Your Heart?
When it comes to sexual purity, I can’t stress enough that it’s a HEART issue. I can write all the blog posts in the world and it won’t make a difference if your heart isn’t there. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt. 6:21). If your boyfriend or girlfriend is the center of your world, you WILL do anything for them including give up your purity.
God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) MUST be the center, the beginning and end of your day, your strength, and He has to be your everything. Why? If you put your faith in man, you will be let down each and every time. “It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in humans” (Psalm 118:8). It’s dangerous to be in a place where you are relying on someone for things only God can give you.
So, how do you find where your heart is? How can you redirect it? Let’s look at some tips to help you get your heart right so this fight for sexual purity can be set up for success.
Tip #1- Are you hurting?- If there are places that need healing in your life, heal them. Your relationship with God may be stagnant because you haven’t been real with Him. He already knows the place that’s hurting. He’s waiting for you to give it to Him. ALL of it.
Tip #2- How do you know if you are hurting?- Talk. If tears start to show up every time a particular subject comes up, that’s a sure sign this may be something you need to address.
Tip #3- How do I redirect my hurt?- GO, RUN, STAY, before your God. He is YOURS. God uses prayer, praising, fasting, reading His Word to help form our hearts. If it’s broken, He’ll fix it. Guaranteed!
How important is your heart? It’s the difference between life and death. Your sexual purity depends on it. “The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him” (Psalm 37:23). The definition of firm is “having a solid, almost unyielding surface or structure” (www.google.com, 2013). He is the ONLY one who can take your pain, mistakes, shame, and redeem all of it. Let him! J
